The Rosie

This is a song for the pandemic. It recalls the black death of old Europe with its Ring around the Rosie and Ashes reference, while placing it in our current time of sequestering. The rainbow reference is the modern image of searching adopted first by children in Italy, and mixed with the old testament covenant. The glasses also share dual meaning. I made it for the Ren Faire crowd.

In a world so wide and wonderful, we share our need to roam.
Though circumstances differ, all call this Earth our home.
While many highlight differences, and where they place the blame,
in caring for our neighbors, we show we’re still the same.

With a ring around the rosie - your pocket full of posies
like wind blowing ashes, we all drift away.
We’re struggling to let go while searching for our rainbow,
well beyond our glasses past the future of our days.

For a step or two we stumble in this circle that we dance.
We all lead, and we all follow, as we contemplate our chance.
For the present we may mumble, even as we cry
for the souls that need protecting, for the ones we weep good-bye

Every tale has its essence, its beginning, and its end.
Some bring understanding. Some we may not comprehend.
