The Christmas story that we first think about is with shepherds and angels from Luke, with an addendum of magi from Matthew. In Mark, it all begins with baptism.... but John begins with the imagery of light and word. Since medieval times, the light of a single candle has represented the presence of God. I wrote this song first, and then used it for the central imagery of my cantata. The light shines in the darkness...
