about

Good King Wenceslas is a song by the same writer as O Come, O Come Emmanuel, so, of course I could not just leave it alone. I mean, it is a non-secular Christmas song... well, sort of. It never mentions Jesus, or Angels, or Shepherds, or Magi. But it does mention charity, and the Feast of Stephen, which is December 26th, the day we commemorate Stephen's death.

Jesus is the only biblical character whose birthday we still celebrate (because no one cares about Herod's or Pharaoh's), and we really don't know what day it should be, so it has been plopped on top of the winter solstice in order to hijack the holiday.

I decided it needed a bit of a swing beat. Enjoy.

lyrics

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the Feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even

Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gathering winter fuel

Hither, page, and stand by me,
If thou knowst it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?

Sire, he lives a good league hence,
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes fountain.

Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I shall see him dine
When we bear them thither.

Page and monarch, forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude winds wild lament
And the bitter weather
